Waiata | Songs

Waiata carry the heart, history, and identity of Maaori culture. They pass down stories, values, and knowledge across generations, express deep emotions, and acknowledge people, places, and events. Waiata strengthen connections to whaanau, iwi, and whenua, building unity, cultural pride, and continuity.

He Taonga Kākaho

He Taonga Kākaho was established as a repository for the waiata of Ngāti Hauā, created to protect and preserve these taonga through the use of modern technology so they may be safely carried into future generations. The waiata were recorded in 2022 at Te Iti o Hauā Marae, with the involvement of our kaumaatua and whaanau of Ngāti Hauā. Many practices took place at Kai-a-te-mata Marae, making this a special and meaningful time for all involved. Since then, many voices have been lost, yet their beautiful sounds live on through these recordings, allowing their presence and legacy to remain with us.
