This page provides detailed information to assist you with the process of booking the marae through our website. It includes answers to commonly asked questions regarding availability, booking requirements, facilities, tikanga, pricing, and expectations before, during, and after your stay.
Manuwhiri are encouraged to review this information prior to submitting a booking request to help ensure a smooth and well-prepared visit. If the information you require is not provided here, please contact our Marae Booking Officer for further assistance.
We accept booking requests from whaanau, hapuu, iwi, schools, community groups, and various organisations.
The marae may be used for:
- Hui and waananga
- Tangihanga
- Weddings
- Birthdays and significant celebrations
- Cultural, educational, or community events
Some events may not be appropriate. Please discuss your plans with us before booking.

All hirers, guests, and service providers must respect and adhere to the Tikanga and Kawa of Kai-a-te-mata Marae at all times. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Following the guidance and instructions of kaumaatua, kuia, and designated Marae representatives
- Respecting waahi tapu, the wharenui, and all Marae facilities
- Maintaining appropriate behaviour, language, and dress
Failure to comply may result in the event being stopped and/or future bookings being declined.
Please read the Tikanga and Kawa page along with our Terms and Conditions of Hire on our website.
To uphold our kawa and tikanga, a whakatau is required for all new bookings.
If your roopuu has previously visited our marae for the same purpose, a whakatau is not required.
When hiring Kai-a-te-mata Marae for day use, the hirer is authorised to use the marae and all available facilities during the specified times for the intended purpose(s). This includes:
- Wairere (Wharenui) – mattresses and pillows
- Tutekaaapua (Wharekai) – dining tables, chairs, washing machine, dryer, cooking facilities and equipment
- Tumataura – wharepaku (showers and toilets), kitchenette facilities and equipment
- Gas, water, power, and cleaning products
- Internet
- Linen (available for an additional cost)
- Catering services
While we do not provide catering, we can connect you with caterers from within the paa. All arrangements must be made directly with them. Any external caterer who has not previously visited the marae must complete a whakatau before providing services.

Te Whare Tuupuna O Wairere (Wharenui) can accommodate up to 80 people for overnight stays.
Te Whare Tuupuna Tumataura can accommodate up to 40 people for overnight stays.
- $200.00 per day + GST (as per invoice) for Hura Koowhatu, Hapori, and Ngaati Hauaa entities
- $750.00 per day + GST (as per invoice) for Corporate or Government entities

When making payment, please include your Name and Invoice Number (top left of invoice) as reference.
- A $100 bond is required prior to arrival
- The bond will be refunded within 72 hours after inspection and return of keys, provided no damage, loss, or additional cleaning is required
Koha is welcomed but not required. If you wish to contribute, please transfer to:

Please include your Name, Invoice Number, and the word “Koha” in the payment particulars.
Tangihanga takes precedence. In this event, all bookings will be cancelled, and the hirer notified. Where possible, the Marae Booking Officer may assist in locating an alternative venue at another Ngaati Hauaa Marae. If booking an unveiling, the Marae Booking Officer must be informed, as a formal process applies.
The person making the booking is responsible for:
- All attendees
- Adhering to marae rules, kawa and tikanga
- Any damage or issues that arise
A marae representative may be present during your event.
Keys and Key Holder Responsibilities
- A booking key will be issued and must be signed for
- The key must be returned to the Marae Booking Officer at the conclusion of the hire, unless otherwise agreed
- If the key is lost, the $100 bond will be used to replace locks and keys

- The hirer is responsible for removing all rubbish and food scraps (excluding approved non-perishable items)
- All rubbish must be disposed of in the skip bin located behind the kitchen
- The marae must be cleaned according to the provided Cleaning Checklist
No. The washer and dryer may only be used for tea towels.
Decorations may be allowed with prior approval.
- No damage to walls, carvings, or tukutuku
- No open flames or candles unless approved
All decorations must be removed after the event.
Please notify the Marae Booking Officer as soon as possible.
- All cancellations must be made in writing
- Refunds (if any) are at the discretion of the Marae Booking Officer and may depend on the notice period given
