Kaitiaki | Trustees and Marae Committee
Trustees and the Marae Committee share responsibility for ensuring the marae is safe, inclusive, and well managed. This includes maintaining accurate records, protecting the mana and reputation of the marae, communicating openly with the Ngaati Werewere ki Kai-a-te-mata whaanau and funders, and meeting all reporting and compliance obligations.
Together, they uphold the marae vision and strategic direction, manage risks and complaints, convene hui and keep records, protect and share maatauranga Maaori, and maintain strong communication between governance and operations, and with the Ngaati Werewere ki Kai-a-te-mata whaanau.
Marae Trustees
Trustees hold overall governance responsibility and provide long-term oversight of the marae. They are responsible for financial stewardship, budgeting, legal and charitable compliance, and maintaining accurate records.
Working alongside the Marae Committee and the wider Ngaati Werewere ki Kai-a-te-mata whaanau, trustees set the strategic direction of the marae, approve plans, engage staff or contractors where required, and ensure strong governance and health and safety systems are in place. Their role is to protect and sustain the marae so it remains compliant, resilient, and supported for future generations.

Marae Committee
The Marae Committee is responsible for the day-to-day management of the marae. This includes coordinating bookings, events, volunteers, cleaning, and supporting tangihanga and other marae activities.
The committee helps ensure the marae is safe, well maintained, and properly resourced, looks after facilities and supplies, supports fundraising efforts, and keeps the marae calendar and whaanau communications up to date, while reporting regularly to Trustees and the wider Ngaati Werewere ki Kai-a-te-mata whaanau.
